Electricity Supply Board

About ESB

Electricity Supply Board (ESB), also known in Irish as Bord Soláthair an Leictreachais, is Ireland’s state-owned electricity utility. Established in 1927 and headquartered in Dublin, ESB is active across the electricity value chain, including power generation, network infrastructure, and supply. Through ESB Networks, the company owns the national transmission assets and builds, operates, and maintains the distribution network (with the transmission system operated by EirGrid). ESB supplies residential, commercial, and industrial customers under the Electric Ireland brand and provides engineering and consultancy services via ESB International. It also has generation and supply interests in the UK.

ESB’s generation portfolio spans gas-fired plants, hydroelectric stations, and a growing base of wind and solar assets, alongside the phased retirement or conversion of legacy fossil capacity. The company invests in grid modernization, interconnection, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. For energy-intensive sectors, including chemicals and related process industries, ESB provides electricity supply, grid connections, and options to procure renewable power, supporting Ireland’s broader decarbonization and energy security objectives.
