The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is a U.S. Department of Defense agency responsible for reducing risks from weapons of mass destruction and emerging threats. Its mission spans the prevention, detection, deterrence, and response to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) hazards, working across the U.S. government and with international partners to enhance global security.
For the chemical sector, DTRA supports nonproliferation and counterproliferation efforts and advances research and development in chemical agent detection, analytics, decontamination, protective materials, and consequence management. The agency helps strengthen preparedness and response capabilities, contributes to securing hazardous materials, and supports implementation of international norms and treaty compliance. DTRA collaborates with other federal agencies, allied governments, academia, and industry, and manages contracts with private-sector technology providers to deliver operational capabilities worldwide.
