Its role Developer
Cartagena Hydrogen Network S.L. (CHYNE) is a Spanish limited liability company incorporated in June 2022 to develop, promote, and manage renewable hydrogen projects, with its core activity centered on the CHYNE or Cartagena Large Scale Electrolyzer initiative.
The company acts as the project promoter and permit applicant for a 100 MW alkaline electrolyzer plant located adjacent to Repsol's Cartagena refinery in the Escombreras valley, Murcia region. The facility is designed to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year (approximately 1.8 tonnes per hour) using electricity sourced via renewable power purchase agreements, along with oxygen for local industrial consumers. It will substitute grey hydrogen in refinery processes such as hydrotreating and hydrocracking, avoiding up to 167,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, and supports Spain's PNIEC targets and the Murcia Hydrogen Valley ecosystem. Future integration into the natural gas network or Spanish Hydrogen Backbone is planned.
CHYNE operates as a joint venture with Repsol holding a 75% stake and Enagás Renovable a 25% stake following a 2025 ownership restructuring that ended its single-shareholder status. The project, recognized as an IPCEI under the Hy2Use program, has secured €155 million in public funding from Spain's IDAE via NextGenerationEU, with a total investment exceeding €300 million. It is expected to create around 900 jobs across phases and become operational in 2029.
Registered in Madrid with a social object focused on hydrogen production, storage, transport, use, and related project management, CHYNE contributes to Repsol's net-zero by 2050 strategy and Spain's leadership in the European renewable hydrogen sector as part of the emerging industrial decarbonization value chain.

Plans include renewable hydrogen, a renewable-fuel plant, pumped hydro expansion and a circular methanol facility; extends customer fuel discounts and launches a new €950m buyback.
Acquires majority stake leaving Enagás with 20%; portfolio exceeds 850MW electrolysis, 20+ projects and eight FIDs, including Cartagena (2025) and Onuba (first 300MW FID Mar 2026).
A 100 MW electrolyzer in Cartagena will produce 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, cutting 167,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, with €155 million in EU funding. Operational by 2029.
Projects paused due to regulatory issues, impacting Spain's green hydrogen goals. Repsol shifts focus to Portugal, citing need for stable policies to support energy transition investments.
The 2.5 MW electrolyzer produces 350 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, reducing carbon footprints and powering transport. Future plans include larger electrolyzers and regional hydrogen initiatives.
