BEST - Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies GmbH is an Austrian research and technology organization focused on bioenergy and renewable, circular carbon solutions. It develops and scales thermochemical (such as gasification and pyrolysis) and biochemical processes (such as anaerobic digestion and fermentation) that convert biomass and waste into renewable fuels, gases, and chemical feedstocks. Its facilities enable work from laboratory to pilot and demonstration scale, covering process development, optimization, analytics, and systems integration with industrial partners.
For the chemical industry, BEST’s work centers on producing synthesis gas and other intermediates for downstream manufacture of chemicals and polymers, supporting the substitution of fossil inputs with biomass- and waste-derived feedstocks. The organization also advances chemical recycling routes for complex mixed residues, conducts techno-economic and life-cycle assessments, and collaborates with industry and academia to de-risk deployment. These activities support decarbonization, resource efficiency, and circular-economy pathways across chemicals, energy, and mobility value chains.
