Veolia signs three MOUs with Saudi partners on desalination, mining water reuse and LPG decarbonisation
- Veolia signed three memorandums of understanding with Acwa, Ma’aden and Khazeen covering water technologies and hazardous-waste management.
- The Acwa collaboration targets desalination performance for projects totalling 9.7 million m³/day and could cut up to 500,000 tonnes CO2 per year.
- The Ma’aden MOU focuses on industrial water-cycle optimisation, treatment and reuse of wastewater and tailings, plus waste reduction and material valorisation.
- The Khazeen agreement covers decarbonisation of storage infrastructure, industrial water treatment, hazardous-waste management and an integrated facility-management offer for clients.
Scope and partners
Veolia has signed three strategic memorandums of understanding with Saudi industrial players Acwa, Ma’aden and Khazeen to enhance cooperation on water technologies and hazardous-waste treatment. The agreements aim to support resource preservation, circular-economy development, decarbonisation and local capability building, in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 and Veolia’s GreenUp programme.
Acwa: desalination value chain
The Acwa MOU targets improved seawater desalination plant design across energy efficiency, chemical use optimisation, water quality and operational best practices. It is intended to benefit Acwa’s existing and future projects, whose current capacity is 9.7 million m³ per day. Veolia estimates potential emissions reductions of up to 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually while lowering operating costs and strengthening regional water security.
Ma’aden: mining water and waste
The Ma’aden agreement focuses on optimising industrial water cycles and industrial-waste management in the mining sector, including treatment and reuse of industrial water, and exploring source reduction, recovery and material valorisation to create circular economy loops.
Khazeen: decarbonising storage infrastructure
The Khazeen MOU covers deployment of environmental technologies for decarbonisation, industrial water treatment and hazardous-waste management across LPG storage infrastructures, and foresees development of an integrated facility-management offering for Khazeen’s clients.
Local track record
Veolia has operated in Saudi Arabia since 1975 and has longstanding involvement in treating industrial wastewater in major industrial complexes such as Jubail; the new agreements are presented as an extension of that role to secure essential resources and reduce environmental impacts.
