UPM and Paramelt launch bio-based paper food packaging

Key highlights
  • UPM Specialty Materials and Paramelt co-developed a paper-based food packaging concept combining UPM Solide Lucent / UPM Prego base papers with Paramelt Aquavate Bio SB 2383 coating.
  • Aquavate Bio SB 2383 is a water-based dispersion ~90% biobased, PHA-containing, biodegradable and certified home-compostable; in-house tests (modified ISO 20200) show disintegration when combined with UPM paper.
  • The solution delivers strong grease resistance at low coat weights, runs on standard converting/VFFS lines, is certified recyclable (Cepi/4evergreen v.2) and components are validated for industrial (EN13432) and home (NFT51-800) composting.

Product concept

UPM Specialty Materials and Paramelt have co-developed a bio-based, paper-based food packaging concept that combines grease protection with improved end-of-life performance for bakery, fast-food and convenience applications.

Materials

The solution pairs UPM Solide™ Lucent or UPM Prego™ barrier base papers with Paramelt Aquavate™ Bio SB 2383, a water-based dispersion formulated from biodegradable ingredients and reported to be ~90% biobased and to contain PHA.

Performance and processing

Combined materials deliver strong grease resistance at low coat weights and are designed to run on standard converting and packaging equipment, including VFFS lines; in-house testing (modified ISO 20200) indicates the paper-plus-coating disintegrates consistent with home compostability protocols.

Certifications and availability

The packaging concept is presented as recyclable under Cepi/4evergreen v.2; UPM barrier base papers hold industrial (EN13432) and home (NFT51-800) compostability certifications, and samples will be shown at Interpack 2026 (UPM stand Hall 8A Stand 29; Paramelt stand Hall 7 A02B).
