BASF expands Ultrason PAES for AI-driven E&E components
- BASF expands Ultrason polyarylethersulfones (PSU, PESU, PPSU) into E&E components for AI-driven data centers, connectivity and e-mobility.
- Target applications include fiber-optic connectors, cable jacketing, magnet wire insulation, and thermal-management parts such as fan blades, fittings and manifolds.
- Ultrason P (PPSU) is suitable for magnet wire insulation in hot oil at temperatures up to 200°C and can replace PFAS-containing polymers for jacketing and insulation.
- BASF provides a broad viscosity range of grades plus tailored grade selection, part-design optimization, injection-molding and extrusion know-how, and access to a global technical network.
Materials and performance
BASF positions its Ultrason polyarylethersulfones—Ultrason E (PESU), Ultrason S (PSU) and Ultrason P (PPSU)—for demanding electrical and electronic (E&E) components. The transparent thermoplastics combine high thermal resistance across a wide temperature range, good electrical insulation, dimensional stability, inherent flame retardancy and chemical resistance, and offer colorability from translucent to opaque.
Applications
The grades target fast-developing needs in AI-driven data centers, high-speed connectivity and e-mobility, with specific uses including fiber-optic connectors (LC and MPO), cable jacketing, aluminum and copper magnet wire insulation (PPSU rated for operation in hot oil up to 200°C) and thermal-management parts such as fittings, manifolds and fan blades.
Processing and customer support
BASF positions Ultrason as an alternative to PEI, PEEK and PAI, emphasizing processability and cost efficiency. The company offers a broad viscosity range for molding and extrusion, tailored grade selection, part-design optimization, injection-molding and extrusion know-how, and access to a global expert network to shorten development cycles and support miniaturized, integrated E&E designs.
