TotalEnergies and Mistral to develop frontier AI models for reservoir exploration and engineering

Programme

TotalEnergies and Mistral will run a three-year joint programme, representing an investment of more than €100 million, to develop a new generation of frontier AI models to support geosciences experts in the exploration, characterisation and development of oil and gas reservoirs.

Technology and data

The partnership will draw on recent advances in artificial intelligence, notably agentic AI, and intends to combine nearly 10 petaflops of data with almost a century of TotalEnergies' geoscience and reservoir engineering knowledge to integrate, process and interpret large volumes of data and generate multiple development scenarios.

Organisation

Partners will establish a joint scientific laboratory that pairs TotalEnergies' subsurface teams with Mistral's scientific and technological capabilities to develop solutions tailored to the company's operational needs and to create proprietary models within a European digital ecosystem.

Objectives and leadership comments

The models are intended to help experts analyse complex data, improve decision-making, optimise projects and extend asset life. TotalEnergies' CEO framed the move as supporting competitiveness and a high-performing European digital ecosystem, while Mistral's CEO highlighted the models' applicability to complex industrial processes and the importance of customisable AI that protects intellectual property.
