Topsoe to Supply Technology for Essar's £360 Million Carbon Capture Project in Chester, UK

At a glance
  • Essar's £360 million carbon capture facility at Stanlow refinery will be operational by 2028.
  • The facility will capture 1 million tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to removing 220,000 cars from the road.
  • Captured CO2 will be sequestered in depleted gas fields under Liverpool Bay.
  • Topsoe's SNOX™ technology will remove nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and other contaminants from flue gas.

Project Overview

Essar Oil UK has selected Topsoe to provide its SNOX™ technology for a £360 million carbon capture facility at the Stanlow refinery in North West England. The facility is expected to be operational by 2028 and aims to capture 1 million tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to removing 220,000 cars from the road.

Technology and Implementation

Topsoe's SNOX™ technology will be used to remove nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, dust, and other contaminants from the flue gas emitted during the production process. The captured CO2 will be permanently sequestered in depleted gas fields under the sea in Liverpool Bay. The SNOX™ process operates without consuming water or limestone and does not generate waste or ocean discharge.

Environmental Impact

The carbon capture facility is a key component of Essar's broader decarbonization strategy, which includes a $1.2 billion investment to become the world's first low-carbon refinery. Combined with an upcoming hydrogen fuel switching project, the facility will reduce the refinery's CO2 emissions by 95%.
