SONATRACH inspects MTBE complex and Arzew refinery upgrades
- MTBE plant capacity: 200,000 tonnes per year.
- Project reported 74% completion at end of September.
- Progressive production slated from May 2026 after pre‑operational work in Q1 2026.
- Reforming unit contract to be signed before end‑October 2025 to raise Arzew gasoline capacity from 450,000 to 1.2 million t/yr.
Inspection and current progress
The SONATRACH chairman and a delegation inspected the MTBE production complex at Arzew and toured the units under construction. Project managers reported a 74% completion rate at the end of September.
Schedule and commissioning
Construction works are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025. Pre‑operational preparations are planned for the first quarter of 2026, with progressive production starting from May 2026.
Project scope and strategic role
The complex covers 14 hectares and will produce 200,000 tonnes per year of methyl tert‑butyl ether (MTBE) to supply SONATRACH refineries. The group expects the plant to enable national MTBE self‑sufficiency, end imports, and create potential exportable surpluses while securing domestic gasoline supply.
Refining upgrade
SONATRACH also plans a new catalytic reforming unit at Arzew; the contract is expected to be signed before the end of October 2025. The unit will increase Arzew refinery gasoline output from 450,000 to 1.2 million tonnes per year.
