Sinopec PBST biodegradable mulch film deployed in Yingkou 10,000‑mu rice project
- Applied in the Yingkou 10,000‑mu rice membrane‑fertilizer‑machinery integrated project.
- PBST was developed by the Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Industry and has more than 100 patent applications.
- Reported benefits include substantial water and fertilizer savings, zero herbicide use, improved fertilizer utilization and reduced methane and other greenhouse gas emissions.
- Project uses a 'new materials + new agronomy + new agricultural machinery' system and an integrated machine that lays film, presses it and transplants rice.
Deployment in Yingkou project
The Yingkou 10,000‑mu rice membrane‑fertilizer‑machinery integrated project has applied Sinopec's PBST fully biodegradable mulch film. Compared with traditional planting models, the project reports substantial water and fertilizer savings, zero herbicide use, improved fertilizer utilization efficiency and reduced methane and other greenhouse gas emissions, supporting yield increases while delivering ecological and economic benefits.
Material and performance
PBST was developed by the Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Industry as a fully biodegradable material with fully independent intellectual property; more than one hundred patent applications have been filed. The PBST mulch film offers high mechanical strength and reportedly outperforms other fully biodegradable materials on UV resistance and water‑vapor barrier properties. Its degradation cycle is flexibly adjustable and the polymer has been applied in mulch films, film bags, foam packaging and other fields.
Integrated technology and machinery
In the Yingkou application the PBST film raises accumulated temperature and suppresses weeds during the rice growth period, then gradually biodegrades under suitable field conditions. The project pairs the material with a 'new materials + new agronomy + new agricultural machinery' system; a supporting film‑laying and rice‑transplanting integrated machine mechanizes film laying, film pressing and rice transplanting, making the PBST film a component of a complete mechanized rice production method.
