Sasol has commissioned Envision Energy to undertake a design study for a green hydrogen system at Sasolburg. The work will evaluate pathways to produce lower‑carbon fuels and chemicals by integrating renewable energy, storage and electrolysers.

Technical focus

The study will assess how renewable generation, battery energy storage systems and electrolysers can be combined and optimised to support green hydrogen production based on forecast energy availability and pricing.

Potential applications and outcomes

Subject to study outcomes and future investment decisions, the produced green hydrogen could be used to make eMethanol and potentially sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF). The design phase will deliver the technical and commercial information required to evaluate next steps.

Context and timeline

The collaboration was highlighted during a visit to Envision's Chifeng Hydrogen Net Zero Industrial Park and reflects ongoing South Africa–China engagement on energy innovation. The design phase is expected to conclude later this year.
