Project Overview
SABIC and Plastic Energy are starting the engineering and construction phase for an advanced recycling unit in Geleen, the Netherlands. This unit will be the first commercial facility to upscale the production of certified circular polymers derived from used plastic.
Joint Venture and Support
The project is a 50-50 joint venture named SPEAR (SABIC Plastic Energy Advanced Recycling BV) and has received a Top Sector Energy Subsidy from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. The unit is expected to become operational in the second half of 2022.
Market Foundation
Since early 2019, SABIC has collaborated with Plastic Energy and leading customers to produce and commercialize certified circular polymers. The new unit will significantly increase the production capacity of these sustainable materials.
Recycling Technology
The unit will use Plastic Energy’s advanced recycling technology to convert low-quality, mixed, and used plastic into TACOIL. This TACOIL will be used by SABIC as an alternative to traditional fossil materials in the production of new circular polymers.
TRUCIRCLE Portfolio
The circular polymers produced will be part of SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE portfolio, which includes design for recyclability, mechanically recycled products, certified circular products from feedstock recycling, and certified renewables from bio-based feedstock. Launched in 2019, the TRUCIRCLE portfolio aims to provide manufacturers with access to more sustainable materials and support the creation of a circular economy for plastics.
