SABIC Opens Semi-Commercial Pyrolysis Oil Facility in The Netherlands

Facility Overview

SABIC is advancing its sustainability efforts with a new semi-commercial facility at its Geleen campus in The Netherlands, set to be operational by 2021. This facility will focus on producing pyrolysis oil from plastic waste, contributing to the circular economy.

Production Goals

The initial output from the facility will supply SABIC’s downstream collaborators, with plans to scale up the supply of certified circular polymers for global customers. SABIC aims to process 200Kt of recycled plastic in Europe by 2025, aligning with the EU Commission pledge.

Global Initiatives

SABIC is actively involved in international initiatives to enhance material circularity and sustainability. In Saudi Arabia, the company supports the Saudi 2030 Vision's waste management objectives, including reducing landfill waste and increasing recycling through strategic alignments with the Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC).

Collaborations and Memberships

SABIC is a founding member of the World Plastics Council and the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, and a partner of The Ocean Clean-Up. These initiatives aim to prevent plastic waste from entering marine environments and ecosystems.

TRUCIRCLE™ Solutions

SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE™ solutions include certified circular polymers from chemical recycling, certified bio-based renewable polymers, and mechanically recycled polymers. These solutions contribute to the company’s efforts to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Internal Sustainability Efforts

SABIC is also focused on recycling waste from its own manufacturing processes for use as secondary feedstock. The company has initiated a holistic program to optimize the performance of its manufacturing facilities by enhancing expertise, knowledge, and culture related to sustainability.
