New Facility Announcement
Dr. Uwe Brunk, President of WeylChem Group of Companies (WCGC), announced a significant investment in a new production facility for aromatic ring chlorination at the Group’s site in Frankfurt-Höchst. The facility aims to enhance existing side-chain chlorination technology and establish a sustainable production cycle. Production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2022.
Enhanced Capabilities
WeylChem Höchst has decades of experience in side-chain chlorination. The new facility will build on this expertise, expanding capabilities to include aromatic ring chlorination for the speciality chemicals market. This move addresses the growing demand in Europe for local and resilient supply chains, optimizing resource use and supporting a circular economy.
Sustainability Efforts
The new plant will refine 4-Chlorobenzotrichloride (p-TRI), a by-product of side-chain chlorination, into 2,3,4,5-Tetrachlorobenzoyl chloride (TCBC), significantly reducing waste. All other by-products are already being refined or sold, further minimizing the waste footprint and underlining the Group’s commitment to sustainability.
Supply Chain Integration
WeylChem Group will also backward integrate by installing its own proprietary supply chain to utilize these products in the HALEX plant at Allessa in Frankfurt-Fechenheim. This strategic step aims to meet market demand for flexible, European-regulated side-chain chlorination and advance the Group’s repositioning in the market.
