Plug Power ships 1 MW GenEco electrolyzer to HWR Hydrogen in New Zealand

Plug Power shipped a 1 MW GenEco PEM electrolyzer to HWR Hydrogen for installation at HWR’s refuelling station in Invercargill, New Zealand. The unit will produce hydrogen locally to supply the station.

Operational use and local impact

The electrolyzer will support HWR’s fleet of Change Fuel Technologies dual‑fuel hydrogen‑diesel heavy trucks and provide refuelling capability for other customers and OEM hydrogen vehicles as they become available. HWR says the Invercargill installation is intended to prove a model that can be extended across the South Island, helping establish the infrastructure required for broader adoption in Southland and beyond.

Regional context

Plug frames the delivery as one element of a growing hydrogen ecosystem across New Zealand and Australia, ranging from distributed production to large industrial projects. The company already supplies electrolyzer technology to Hiringa Energy’s green hydrogen refuelling network and was selected to provide a 50 MW GenEco PEM system for Orica’s Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub, which is expected to produce approximately 4,700 metric tons of renewable hydrogen annually.

Plug CEO José Luis Crespo said the deployment represents Plug building a strong presence in the emerging market with technology and experience to support projects at every scale. Gareth Wishart, GM Technology & Innovation at HWR, said installing the Plug GenEco equipment will supply hydrogen initially for dual‑fuel trucks and that the station will be ready to refuel OEM‑supplied hydrogen vehicles as they arrive.
