Certification
ORLEN secured KZR INiG certification for co-hydrotreatment of bio-based feedstocks at its Płock refinery, a scheme recognised by the European Commission that verifies feedstock origin and confirms the production process meets applicable EU requirements.
Current operations and feedstocks
The refinery currently operates the co-hydrotreatment process with bio-based materials accounting for up to 3.5% of the feed, equivalent to approximately 100,000 tonnes of renewable feedstocks per year. Eligible feedstocks include vegetable oils such as rapeseed oil and used cooking oil; the company plans to extend certification to cover additional oilseed crops including camelina and mustard.
Scale-up tests and capacity plans
In July 2026 tests at the Płock refinery aimed to increase the share of vegetable oil from 3.5% to 5%, with results confirming the potential to scale the technology. After the necessary upgrades, the refinery’s capacity to process renewable feedstocks is expected to rise to around 150,000 tonnes per year.
Strategic context
The certification enables production of biofuel components to be counted toward EU renewable transport targets and forms part of preparations for the RED III Directive and a ‘Biocrops for Biofuels’ programme to expand domestic feedstock supply with research and agricultural partners.
