First Battery Cell Assembled

The Northvolt Ett gigafactory in Skellefteå, Sweden, has successfully assembled its first lithium-ion battery cell. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first cell fully designed, developed, and assembled by a European battery company at a gigafactory.

Production Timeline

The cell, in a prismatic format, was produced on December 28. The factory's commissioning and upscaling will continue into 2022, with the first commercial deliveries expected within the same year.

Northvolt Ett aims to increase its production capacity to 60 GWh per year in the coming years. This expansion is crucial to meet the demands of over $30 billion worth of contracts secured from major clients, including BMW, Fluence, Scania, Volkswagen, Volvo Cars, and Polestar.

Workforce and Development

The battery cell was initially developed at Northvolt Labs in Västerås, Sweden, which has been operational since early 2020. Currently, Northvolt Ett employs over 500 people from 56 different nationalities, reflecting its diverse and growing workforce.
