Standard Industries, together with operating company W. R. Grace & Co., awarded Molecule.one $1 million as the winner of the Chemical Innovation Challenge: Advancing AI‑Assisted Molecular Synthesis. The Challenge targeted AI improvements to retrosynthesis, the iterative backward‑deconstruction process chemists use to reach readily available starting materials.
Winner and technology
Molecule.one, which operates a highly automated lab in Warsaw and has a presence in Boston, developed a deep‑learning platform that predicts sets of paths to synthesize complex molecules. The team of more than 30 chemists and engineers leverages large datasets, including proprietary experimental data, to make chemical production faster, cheaper and more sustainable.
Competition format and payouts
More than 30 teams entered. An impartial panel from academia and business evaluated submissions through three phases. The nine other Phase‑1 semifinalists each received $10,000, the three other Phase‑2 finalists each received $100,000, and the winner received $1,000,000.
Industry application
Standard and Grace highlighted the platform’s potential to accelerate development and production of pharmaceuticals across areas such as cardiovascular and oncology drugs, antibiotics and antivirals, with Grace’s CDMO positioned to apply the technology to bring complex molecules to market faster.
