MadoquaPower2X Expands Land for Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Production in Portugal

At a glance
  • The project secures 60 hectares in ZILS - Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone.
  • It aims to create 265 permanent and 6,000 indirect jobs by 2025.
  • Phase one will produce 50,000 tons of hydrogen and 300,000 tons of green ammonia annually.
  • Phase two will increase production to 150,000 tons of hydrogen and over 1 million tons of green ammonia annually.

Land Acquisition and Project Scope

MadoquaPower2X (MP2X), a consortium led by Madoqua Renewables, has secured an additional 60 hectares in ZILS - Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone for green hydrogen and ammonia production. The project leverages Portugal's wind and solar energy potential to promote a circular value chain, reduce CO2 emissions, and decrease fossil fuel dependence.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The project aims to create 265 permanent jobs and 6,000 indirect jobs by 2025 through local partnerships and academia. Recognized as part of the "Hydrogen Valley" initiative by the European Commission, MP2X positions Portugal as a pioneer in renewable energy projects.

Production Phases and Targets

In its first phase, MP2X will use 560 MVA to produce 50,000 tons of hydrogen and 300,000 tons of green ammonia annually. The second phase will expand production to 150,000 tons of hydrogen and over 1 million tons of green ammonia annually, contributing significantly to European green hydrogen production targets.

Energy and Territorial Cohesion

MP2X plans to build and operate self-consumption solar and wind farms to supply renewable energy to the industrial unit in Sines. These farms will be located in decentralized areas across Portugal, promoting territorial balance and cohesion.
