KBR advances Woodside Pluto Train 1 modifications

Project overview

Since September 2023 KBR has been executing the Pluto Train 1 Scarborough Modifications Project to enable the existing Train 1 facility to process up to three million tonnes per annum of gas from the Scarborough Energy Project through modifications to existing plant and associated infrastructure.

Scope and technical challenges

The brownfield scope covers installation of a Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) Unit, a Nitrogen Recycle Compressor, gas custody metering systems and a range of supporting‑facility upgrades, all within the current Pluto LNG footprint. The work combines brownfield execution, modular construction and integration within an operating LNG facility.

Progress and milestones

KBR and Woodside have advanced detailed engineering, procurement and construction while maintaining a focus on safety, quality and execution certainty. A key milestone in 2025 was the first major module deck lift at the Laem Chabang fabrication yard in Thailand, part of the largest of three fabrication modules. The project has since delivered and installed the 4,600 tonnes‑equivalent NGL North Module, and hook‑up work to tie the module into Train 1 has commenced.

Delivery approach and local participation

KBR reports using an integrated delivery model to coordinate global teams and support execution, while the project’s supply chain and industry participation initiatives create opportunities for Western Australian businesses, Indigenous suppliers and local communities.
