  • Establish an industrial park in Luleå for critical‑mineral processing and manage Kiruna's urban transformation to sustain mining and community stability.

Leadership and mandate

On 1 April Johan Menckel assumes the role of President and CEO of LKAB and will prioritise presence and listening by meeting employees, citizens and decision‑makers to assess how company decisions affect everyday life in mines, facilities and surrounding communities.

Strategic priorities

LKAB's strategy focuses on three priorities: modernise mining through automation, electrification and digitalisation to enable safe, efficient operations at greater depths; transition processes to carbon‑free production, including development of carbon‑free sponge iron in Gällivare; and develop extraction and processing of critical minerals, including an industrial park in Luleå.

Local projects and challenges

Key local issues include securing continued mining while managing Kiruna's urban transformation and its impact on residents, advancing technology in Gällivare, and establishing processing capacity for critical minerals in Luleå.

Execution requirements

Menckel emphasises the need to execute the core business well today while enabling tomorrow by securing the right skills, efficient ways of working, clear priorities, production stability and long‑term profitability, and by drawing on internal knowledge while remaining open to new ideas.
