INEOS Inovyn: First in Europe with ISCC PLUS Certified Green Hydrogen

Key highlights
  • Antwerp site produces 60,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen annually.
  • Hydrogen production certified under ISCC PLUS from June 2023.
  • Chlor-Alkali electrolysis uses wind power from Belgium's North Coast.

Certification Achievement

INEOS Inovyn's hydrogen production at its Antwerp site has been certified under the ISCC PLUS scheme, marking it as the first European company to achieve full greenhouse gas data certification for renewable hydrogen.

Production Details

The site produces 60,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen annually using Chlor-Alkali electrolysis, which involves the electrolysis of brine to produce chlorine, caustic soda/potash, sodium hypochlorite, and hydrogen.

Renewable Energy Source

The electricity for this process is sourced from wind turbines located off Belgium’s North Coast, ensuring the hydrogen is derived from renewable energy.

Impact on Customers

This certification allows customers to trace sustainable materials along supply chains and develop downstream products with reduced Scope 3 emissions, enhancing their sustainability credentials.
