- Petrobras selected Honeywell UOP's Ethanol-to-Jet (ETJ) technology for a proposed REPLAN refinery project in São Paulo.
- If approved, the REPLAN ETJ unit would produce up to 10,000 barrels per day of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from ethanol.
- The project would be the first large-scale ETJ initiative in Latin America.
- In 2024 Petrobras licensed Honeywell UOP's HEFA process for RPBC in Cubatão to produce SAF and renewable diesel from soybean oil and beef tallow.
Project summary
Petrobras selected Honeywell UOP’s Ethanol-to-Jet (ETJ) process for a proposed unit at the REPLAN refinery in São Paulo that, if approved, would produce up to 10,000 barrels per day of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from ethanol—the first large-scale ETJ project in Latin America.
Feedstock and emissions impact
The ETJ route uses ethanol as the renewable feedstock, leveraging Brazil’s ethanol supply to expand SAF availability and reduce lifecycle carbon emissions for domestic and international airlines.
Partnership and prior work
Petrobras and Honeywell have an established collaboration in refining, gas processing and automation (including deployment of Honeywell Experion PKS); in 2024 Petrobras licensed Honeywell UOP’s HEFA process for the Presidente Bernardes Refinery (RPBC) to produce SAF and renewable diesel from soybean oil and beef tallow.
