Holcim backs 44.01 to scale CO2 mineralization storage
- Holcim has invested in 44.01 to support the developer’s scaling and international expansion.
- Since July a pilot at Holcim’s Fujairah cement plant is injecting captured CO2 into underground ultramafic rock where it is being mineralized into stable carbonate rock.
- 44.01’s process injects captured CO2 into naturally reactive ultramafic formations to convert it into permanent carbonate rock when geological conditions permit.
- Other investors in 44.01 include JERA, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Equinor Ventures, Air Liquide Venture Capital and Siemens Financial Services; Holcim MAQER Ventures has made 22 investments to date.
Investment and partnership
Holcim has invested in 44.01 to support the developer’s scaling and international expansion, marking the next step in an established commercial relationship between the two companies. The investment is part of Holcim’s open innovation activities managed through Holcim MAQER Ventures, which has made 22 investments to date.
Pilot project
Since July the companies have been running a pilot under live industrial conditions at Holcim’s Fujairah cement plant in the United Arab Emirates, where captured CO2 is being safely stored underground and mineralized into solid carbonate rock.
Technology and strategic rationale
44.01’s technology injects captured CO2 into naturally reactive ultramafic rock formations, where it mineralizes into stable carbonate rock. Holcim says this pathway enables storage close to production where the right geological conditions exist, helping manage captured carbon at inland sites with limited access to offshore storage and aligning with its NextGen Growth 2030 strategy.
