Project start and financing
Sumitomo Corporation, through its wholly owned BS Holdings, has begun construction of a grid-scale battery energy storage system in Namie, Fukushima with a rated output of 62 MW and storage capacity of 291 MWh. MUFG Bank Ltd. is serving as lead arranger for project financing.
Policy selection and timeline
The project was selected under Japan’s Long-Term Decarbonization Power Source Auction, a scheme launched in 2024 to promote investments in decarbonized power and storage. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in 2029.
Regional role and local partnership
The facility is intended to support wider renewable adoption in the Tohoku region by helping balance variable solar and wind generation and stabilise the grid. Sumitomo says it has worked with Namie Town on community development around Namie Station and on local initiatives including a battery storage project for on-site renewable consumption.
Company experience and portfolio
Sumitomo has experience operating battery energy storage projects across Japan, including a grid-scale demonstration on the Koshiki Islands and an EV Battery Station in Chitose. Including projects under construction, the company is involved in nine battery energy storage projects with a combined output of approximately 200 MW and plans to expand its BESS and energy management activities in Japan.
