Key highlights
  • $750 million expansion adding 211,000 sq ft, doubling the Hillsboro site.
  • Commercial operations are planned to begin in 2031.
  • Project will create about 250 high-wage manufacturing jobs and support roughly 200 construction roles.
  • New capacity adds device fill-finish and combination-product manufacturing with AI, automation, robotics and an exact digital twin.

Project scope

Genentech broke ground on a $750 million expansion of its Hillsboro, Oregon manufacturing site. The 211,000-square-foot addition doubles the existing campus; construction has started and commercial operations are planned for 2031.

Capacity and capabilities

The expanded facility will add device fill-finish capabilities, including combination-product manufacturing, with flexible high- and low-volume filling designed to serve oncology, neurology and immunology medicines. Planned onsite capabilities include filling and inspection, device assembly and packaging, and cold storage.

Jobs and technology

The project is expected to create approximately 250 high-wage manufacturing positions and support about 200 construction jobs. New roles will pair traditional manufacturing expertise with digital skills in AI, automation and robotics; the site will feature an exact digital twin for real-time monitoring and continuous improvement.

Network context

The Hillsboro campus, established in 2006 on a 75-acre site, already supports drug product manufacturing, packaging, distribution and individualized therapies. The expansion is part of Roche and Genentech’s broader U.S. manufacturing investments, building on recent milestones in Holly Springs, North Carolina and Boston, Massachusetts; together they employ about 25,000 people in the U.S. across 15 R&D centers and 13 manufacturing sites.
