BENEO's Faba Bean Protein: A Cost-Effective Alternative to Animal Blood Plasma in Wet Pet Food

Key highlights
  • Faba bean protein concentrate can fully or partially replace animal blood plasma in wet pet food.
  • Trials showed faba bean protein offers better binding than pea protein concentrate.
  • BENEO filed an international patent for faba bean protein as an alternative to animal blood plasma.
  • Faba bean protein is highly digestible with a protein content of 61g/100g and an ileal digestibility score of nearly 90%.

Introduction

Recent trials by BENEO demonstrate that faba bean protein concentrate can effectively replace spray dried animal blood plasma (ABP) in wet pet food. This alternative offers cost savings and maintains product quality.

Trial Results

Initial trials showed that faba bean protein could replace ABP by 50% or 100% without affecting the product's weight or texture. It also outperformed pea protein concentrate in binding properties.

Patent and Sustainability

Following successful trials, BENEO filed an international patent for using faba bean protein as an ABP alternative. The protein is locally sourced in Germany, offering strong sustainability credentials.

Nutritional Profile

Faba bean protein has a high protein content of 61g/100g and an ileal digestibility score of nearly 90%. It is rich in lysine and complements cereal proteins to achieve a complete amino acid profile.
