Evonik Advances Automated Life Cycle Assessments

Key highlights
  • Automated LCAs are ten times faster, reducing assessment time from weeks to days.
  • By 2027, the system will be implemented across all Evonik business lines.
  • The software is based on Sphera Solutions' technology.
  • TÜV Rheinland certified the automated process in July 2025.

Automated Life Cycle Assessments

Evonik has introduced a TÜV-certified software solution that automates Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), significantly enhancing the speed and reliability of sustainability evaluations. This innovation allows for the rapid calculation of environmental impacts, including carbon footprint and water usage, across Evonik's product range.

Efficiency and Scalability

The automated system is approximately ten times faster than manual methods, reducing the time required for an LCA from weeks to just a few days. Currently, automated LCAs are available for over 1,000 products, with plans to expand across all business lines by 2027. The system's scalability and flexibility enable comprehensive environmental evaluations at the push of a button, utilizing data from central databases and external sources.

Partnership and Certification

The software is developed in collaboration with Sphera Solutions, a leader in sustainability and operational risk management software. The partnership began last year, and in July 2025, TÜV Rheinland certified the functionality and accuracy of the automated process, which is based on a previously established manual method.

Strategic Impact

Beyond customer communication, the automated LCAs support Evonik's internal sustainability efforts by informing decisions on raw material and energy use. They also help evaluate CO₂ reduction measures economically. As part of its sustainability strategy, Evonik aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 25% by 2030.
