Evonik Doubles Global VESTAMID® E Capacity in Shanghai and Marl

At a glance
  • Evonik is doubling its global capacity for VESTAMID® E PEBA.
  • Construction at the Shanghai site starts in Fall 2023.
  • Optimization projects are ongoing at the Marl, Germany facility.
  • VESTAMID® eCO has a 42% lower carbon footprint and uses 100% renewable energy.

Expansion Plans

Evonik is set to double its global capacity for VESTAMID® E polyether block amide (PEBA) through a major expansion at its Shanghai Multi-User-Site (MUSC) and an optimization project at its Marl, Germany facility. Construction at the Shanghai site will commence in Fall 2023, enhancing the polymerization process crucial for producing PEBA, which is in high demand in the global athletic footwear market.

Strategic Importance

Ralf Düssel, head of Evonik’s High Performance Polymers business line, highlights that the investment in Shanghai will significantly boost PEBA production capacity, expand regional presence, and better position the company to serve the global market, particularly in Asia where local manufacturing is concentrated.

Ongoing Projects

In addition to the Shanghai expansion, Evonik is undertaking several projects to eliminate bottlenecks and optimize production at its Marl facility. These efforts aim to streamline operations and increase overall efficiency in PEBA production.

Sustainability Initiatives

As part of its “Next-Generation Solutions” strategy, Evonik is focusing on producing VESTAMID® eCO, which retains all the characteristics of a PEBA molding compound but with a 42 percent lower carbon footprint. VESTAMID® eCO is made using 100 percent renewable energy and incorporates 50 percent recycled materials from tires, verified through a third-party audited mass-balance approach.
