Evonik opens AEM application technology center in Shanghai
- Evonik opened its first regional AEM application technology center to test DURAION® membranes in real‑world operating conditions.
- DURAION® membranes are manufactured at commercial scale in Marl, Germany.
- The site includes demonstration‑scale electrolysis test benches to assess membrane performance and long‑term durability from single‑cell to demonstration systems.
- The center will act as a collaborative hub to accelerate development cycles and support AEM electrolysis adoption in China and beyond.
Purpose and scope
Evonik’s Innovation Factory has opened an Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) application technology center in Shanghai to test and optimize its high‑performance DURAION® membranes in real‑world operating conditions. The site is the company’s first such facility in the region and will validate membrane integration to meet specific local customer needs.
Capabilities
Built on Evonik’s expertise in polymer chemistry, membrane technologies and electrochemical materials, the AEM center houses specialised laboratories and demonstration‑scale electrolysis testing capabilities. It includes advanced electrolyser test benches to assess the performance and long‑term durability of the membranes under actual operating conditions.
Strategic objectives
The site will function as a collaborative hub where local experts and partners address technological challenges across the AEM electrolysis value chain, enabling faster development cycles for DURAION® membranes and deeper understanding of AEM‑based electrolysis systems to accelerate market adoption.
Technology context
Anion Exchange Membrane electrolysis generates green hydrogen from water and, compared with other electrolysis solutions, offers greater flexibility in power supply and lower investment costs due to use of less expensive materials.
