CNPC's 800 MW wind-solar project in Jimunai begins grid supply

Key highlights
  • Total installed capacity 800 MW: 600 MW wind (80×7.5 MW turbines) and 200 MW solar (61 PV arrays).
  • Includes a 220 kV step-up substation enabling coordinated aggregation and complementary dispatch of wind and solar.
  • Expected to generate 1.6 billion kWh per year, saving 490,000 tonnes of standard coal annually.
  • Reduces CO2 emissions by 0.96 million tonnes per year and is CNPC’s first large-scale wind project in Xinjiang and Xinjiang Oilfield’s first integrated wind-solar facility.

Project scope

The Xinjiang Oilfield Company wind-solar integrated project in Jimunai, Altay Prefecture, has been commissioned and connected to the grid. The facility has a total installed capacity of 800 MW, comprising 600 MW of wind power (80 wind turbine units of 7.5 MW) and 200 MW of solar power (61 PV arrays), and includes a 220 kV step-up substation.

Performance and grid role

The project enables coordinated aggregation and complementary dispatch of wind and solar power, boosting the local grid’s ability to accommodate clean energy. Once fully operational it is expected to produce 1.6 billion kWh of electricity per year.

Impact

Annual generation is projected to save 490,000 tonnes of standard coal and reduce CO2 emissions by 0.96 million tonnes. The project will supply clean power for the oilfield’s operations and support development of the new energy industrial chain in the Altay region.
