Chemetall Introduces Chromium- and Fluoride-Free Gardolene D for Copper Foils

Key highlights
  • Gardolene D is chromium- and fluoride-free, enhancing copper foil performance in batteries.
  • It complies with EU Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542) for sustainability and hazardous substance limits.
  • From 2027, only compliant batteries will be allowed in the EU market.
  • Gardolene D improves battery lifespan by up to 6% after 1,000 cycles at 25°C.

Introduction

Chemetall has launched Gardolene D, a chromium- and fluoride-free passivation solution for copper foils, aimed at enhancing battery performance and sustainability in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Regulatory Compliance

Gardolene D meets the European Union's Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542), which requires carbon footprint declarations, digital battery passports, and limits on hazardous substances. From 2027, only batteries adhering to these standards will be permitted in the EU market.

Performance Benefits

The solution improves surface energy, enhancing adhesion of anode materials and reducing electrical resistivity, leading to higher battery efficiency. Tests show a 6% increase in battery lifespan after 1,000 cycles at 25°C compared to traditional chromium (VI) methods.

Sustainability Impact

Gardolene D significantly enhances the eco-friendliness of the battery value chain, being the first chromium- and fluoride-free passivation solution for copper foil. It is compatible with existing equipment and suitable for various copper foil substrates used in electric vehicles and energy storage applications.
