Transaction Details
Celanese Corporation has completed the sale of its atmospheric emulsions unit in La Canonja, Tarragona, Spain, to IQOXE. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The unit has a production capacity of 25,000mt and employs 29 people.
Operational Continuity
Under a multi-year agreement, IQOXE will produce certain emulsions products, while Celanese will continue to market Mowilith® and Celvolit® atmospheric emulsions. This ensures continuity in the supply chain for these products.
Strategic Review and Sale Process
Celanese initiated the sale process for both its atmospheric and VAE emulsions units in Tarragona in March 2015. The decision was part of a broader corporate strategy review, focusing on optimizing the company’s global manufacturing footprint for better economies of scale.
Closure of VAE Unit
Despite efforts to find a buyer for the VAE emulsions unit, no credible offers were received. Consequently, Celanese has decided to close the VAE unit, with production ceasing at the end of October. A consultation process with local employee representatives has been completed to mitigate the social impact on affected employees.
Future Supply
Celanese will continue to supply its VAE emulsions customers from its European production network, ensuring that customer needs are met despite the closure of the Tarragona VAE unit.
