bp Advances Bumerangue Discovery Plans in Brazil

Key highlights
  • Initial analysis confirms a ~1,000m hydrocarbon column with ~100m oil and ~900m gas-condensate.
  • Appraisal activities are planned to start in early 2027, pending regulatory approval.
  • Bumerangue is one of 12 exploration discoveries by bp this year, including ventures in the Gulf of America and Namibia.

Discovery Details

bp has confirmed a significant hydrocarbon discovery at the Bumerangue block in the pre-salt Santos Basin, offshore Brazil. Initial laboratory and pressure gradient analysis revealed a ~1,000 metre gross hydrocarbon column, comprising a ~100 metre gross oil column and a ~900 metre gross liquids-rich gas-condensate column.

Appraisal and Development Plans

Further laboratory testing is underway to determine fluid characteristics, gas-to-oil and condensate-to-gas ratios, and in-place volume estimates. Appraisal activities are scheduled to begin in early 2027, subject to regulatory approval.

Strategic Context

Bumerangue is one of 12 exploration discoveries made by bp this year, alongside ventures in the Gulf of America and Namibia through Azule Energy, a joint venture with Eni.
