Boliden Seeks EU Strategic Project Status for Nautanen

Key highlights
  • Nautanen copper deposit is 15 km from Aitik mine in central Norrbotten.
  • Potential annual production is 2-3 Mtonnes over a 20-year mine life.
  • Feasibility studies are ongoing; production may start in early 2030s.
  • EU Commission's assessment results expected in Q2 2026.

Project Overview

Boliden has applied to the European Commission to classify the Nautanen copper deposit as a strategic project under the Critical Raw Materials Act. Located in central Norrbotten, about 15 km northwest of the Aitik copper mine, Nautanen has potential for development as an underground mine.

Infrastructure and Environmental Considerations

The project aims to utilize existing industrial infrastructure at Aitik, such as the mill and tailings facility, to minimize environmental impact. Boliden plans to construct an entrance ramp to access the mine from a distance, further reducing the environmental footprint.

Production and Timeline

The conceptual annual production at Nautanen is estimated at 2-3 million tonnes, with a projected mine life of around 20 years. Feasibility studies are ongoing to finalize the operation details. Production is anticipated to begin in the early 2030s, contingent on obtaining necessary permits.

EU Commission Assessment

The European Commission is expected to announce the assessment results of the strategic project applications in the second quarter of 2026.
