Overview
The European Commission has opened the first matching round under the Biomethane Mechanism to connect potential buyers and suppliers across Europe and support scaling up biomethane production.
Regulatory Dashboard
The launch includes a new Regulatory Dashboard to help market participants navigate and compare national compliance frameworks for biomethane. It initially covers selected EU countries that already account for more than 90% of the EU’s current biomethane production, aiming to facilitate cross-border opportunities and a more integrated market.
How the matching round works
Potential buyers submit their biomethane demand on the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform; suppliers then indicate interest in meeting that demand. Participants with a match receive contact details to pursue commercial negotiations outside the mechanism.
Timeline and background
Key dates: buyers submit demand from 4 November until 23 December 2026; suppliers express interest from 21 January until 4 March 2027; matching results will be published on 18 March 2027. The mechanism, launched in June 2026 under the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform, is a voluntary and free-of-charge tool intended to support biomethane production, trade and investment to reinforce energy security, decarbonisation and industrial competitiveness.
