Bechtel assumes site management for Poland’s first nuclear plant
- Bechtel took over site management from Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) and will oversee construction at the Choczewo site.
- Earthworks have started on the 300-hectare (740-acre) site, including grading, drainage upgrades and roughly 16 km of temporary roads.
- More than 400 people are already working on the project, with about one-third hired in Poland; Bechtel’s Gdansk office is expected to employ ~200.

Handover and scope
Bechtel has assumed responsibility for managing the site where Poland’s first nuclear power plant will be built, taking the project from planning and design into large‑scale site preparation and construction. The handover from Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) coincides with the start of earthworks at the Choczewo site.
Site preparation works
Initial earthworks on the 300 hectare (740 acre) site include grading and leveling, drainage upgrades and construction of about 16 kilometres of temporary roads. Work will also prepare areas for construction offices, logistics facilities, warehouses and equipment maintenance areas to support later phases.
Local industry and workforce
More than 400 personnel are already engaged on the project, roughly one‑third hired in Poland, with that number expected to increase as activity accelerates. Budimex has been contracted to carry out site preparation and Bechtel has signed contracts with Polish firms including DORACO and Unihouse.
Building capacity in Poland
Bechtel will operate partly from a newly opened Gdansk office in Pomerania expected to employ about 200 people. PEJ reports it has awarded contracts to approximately 475 Polish businesses since 2020. The plant will use the AP1000® design.
