Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe sp. z o.o. (PEJ) is a Polish state-owned special purpose vehicle established to develop and deliver nuclear power infrastructure as a key element of Poland's energy transition.
Wholly owned by the State Treasury and supervised by the Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, the company acts as the lead investor and project coordinator for Poland's first nuclear power plant. This facility will comprise three Westinghouse AP1000 Generation III+ pressurized water reactors with a total gross capacity of approximately 3.75 GWe, located at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site in the Choczewo municipality, Pomeranian Voivodeship on the Baltic coast. PEJ works in partnership with the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium for technology supply, engineering, and construction services.
In addition to the initial project, PEJ is responsible for expanding Poland's nuclear fleet to a total installed capacity of 6 to 9 GWe using proven large-scale Generation III+ reactor designs. The company supports the implementation of the Polish Nuclear Power Programme, promotes public understanding of nuclear energy, develops local supply chains and competencies, and adheres to the highest standards of nuclear safety, quality, and environmental protection.
Originally incorporated in 2010 as EJ 1 sp. z o.o. and later linked to the PGE Group, the entity was fully acquired by the Polish state in 2021 and renamed. With its registered seat in Gdańsk and operational presence in Warsaw, PEJ occupies a central position in Poland's strategy to enhance energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and meet long-term climate targets through reliable baseload nuclear power.
