Axens wins U.S. contract to design 100% tire pyrolysis oil hydroprocessing unit
- Process Design Package for a hydroprocessing unit to process 100% tire pyrolysis oil (TPO).
- Product target is low‑sulfur fuel with a maximum sulfur content of 500 ppm.
- Project is in FEED phase with Final Investment Decision (FID) expected in 2027.
- Axens cites more than 300 hydroprocessing references, including Prime‑D™, Revivoil™ and Rewind Mix™.
Project scope
Axens has been selected by a U.S.-based investor and project developer to provide a Process Design Package for a hydroprocessing unit designed to process 100% tire pyrolysis oil (TPO). The overall project includes a local end-of-life tire valorization facility using pyrolysis and a TPO-upgrading hydroprocessing unit.
Product and targets
The hydroprocessing unit is sized to produce low-sulfur fuel for the local market, with a specified maximum sulfur content of 500 ppm. The Process Design Package has been tailored to the project's specific product quality targets and site conditions.
Technology and credentials
Axens will leverage its hydroprocessing expertise and catalyst portfolio to address TPO-specific challenges and impurity management. The selection builds on Axens' track record of more than 300 proven hydroprocessing references worldwide, citing applications such as Distillate Hydrotreating (Prime-D™), Waste Lube Recycling (Revivoil™) and Waste Plastic Pyrolysis Oil Hydroprocessing (Rewind Mix™).
Schedule and impact
The project is currently in the FEED phase, with a Final Investment Decision expected in 2027. Converting end-of-life tires into transportation fuels is highlighted as both an economic opportunity and a contribution to waste-management and resource-efficiency objectives.
