Asahi Kasei’s Tongsuh Petrochemical secures Reasonable Assurance PCF verification for acrylonitrile

Key highlights
  • Tongsuh Petrochemical obtained a Reasonable Assurance verification for the product carbon footprint of acrylonitrile produced at its Ulsan site.
  • Socotec Certification Japan audited the methodology, source data and reporting used to calculate the fiscal 2025 PCF from raw‑material procurement through production.
  • Tongsuh received ISCC PLUS certification in 2021 and has marketed acrylonitrile based on biomass‑derived propylene using a mass‑balance approach since 2022.
  • Asahi Kasei plans further GHG reductions through proprietary catalyst and manufacturing improvements and expanded use of biomass‑based feedstocks.

Verification and scope

Tongsuh Petrochemical, a wholly owned South Korean subsidiary of Asahi Kasei, obtained Reasonable Assurance verification for the product carbon footprint (PCF) of acrylonitrile produced at its Ulsan manufacturing site. The audit was conducted by Socotec Certification Japan and reviewed the methodology, source data and reporting used to calculate the fiscal 2025 PCF from raw‑material procurement through production. The verification meets a high level of assurance and exceeds requirements for a Limited Assurance.

Product context

Acrylonitrile is an essential chemical intermediate used in applications including ABS resins, acrylamide, acrylic fibers and carbon‑fiber precursor materials.

Lower‑carbon measures and next steps

Tongsuh obtained ISCC PLUS certification in 2021 and has produced and marketed acrylonitrile based on biomass‑derived propylene using a mass‑balance approach since 2022. Asahi Kasei says it will continue reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with acrylonitrile production through ongoing improvements in proprietary catalysts and manufacturing technologies and by expanding the use of biomass‑based feedstocks to provide lower‑carbon materials with verified environmental data.
