Arkema obtains SBTi validation for 2035 science-based targets and 2050 net-zero

Key highlights
  • First company validated under the SBTi’s new guidance for the chemical industry.
  • Commits to net-zero by 2050 with a 90% absolute emissions reduction across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 vs 2019.
  • Sets 2035 targets of −58.07% absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions and −68.57% absolute Scope 3 emissions vs 2019.
  • Plans up to €400 million cumulative investment from 2022–2035 to fund process improvements and efficiency, plus energy‑mix transitions and supplier engagement.

SBTi validation

Arkema’s 2035 near‑term targets and its 2050 net‑zero target have been validated by SBTi Services. The Group is reported as the first company validated under the SBTi’s new guidance tailored to the chemical sector.

2035 and 2050 commitments

Arkema’s net‑zero target covers Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and aims for a 90% absolute reduction by 2050 from a 2019 base year, with neutralization used only for the remaining 10% in line with SBTi criteria. For 2035 the Group commits to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 58.07% versus 2019, and to cut absolute Scope 3 emissions by 68.57% versus 2019.

Target breakdown

Within the 2035 Scope 1 and 2 commitment, Arkema specifies a 22.39% absolute reduction in Scope 1 emissions from production of non‑primary chemicals (per SBTi definitions) covering all production activities, and a 78.44% reduction of all remaining absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Financing and measures

The plan is supported by up to €400 million of cumulative investment for 2022–2035 to finance process improvements and energy‑efficiency projects. Arkema will continue shifting its energy mix toward low‑carbon sources and pursue Scope 3 reductions by favoring lower‑carbon activities and engaging suppliers in decarbonization.
