The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global partnership that helps companies and financial institutions set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets in line with climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement. Formed by CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), SBTi develops standards and guidance that align corporate decarbonization with 1.5°C pathways and net-zero trajectories.
SBTi establishes target-setting criteria, provides validation services, and maintains a public database of approved targets to increase transparency and accountability. Its framework covers Scope 1, Scope 2, and relevant Scope 3 emissions across value chains, with cross-sector methods and sector-specific guidance for energy-intensive industries, including chemicals. Tools such as the Net-Zero Standard and sectoral methodologies enable companies to translate climate science into measurable, time-bound targets and track progress against them.
