Science Based Targets Initiative

About SBTi

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global partnership that defines best-practice standards for corporate greenhouse gas reduction targets and independently assesses whether those targets align with climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement. Established by CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), SBTi provides methodologies and criteria for setting Scope 1, 2, and 3 targets, including 1.5°C-aligned near-term targets and a corporate Net-Zero Standard.

Widely used across energy-intensive sectors, including chemicals, SBTi’s frameworks help companies translate decarbonization pathways into measurable, time-bound commitments covering operations and value chains. The initiative sets validation criteria, expects transparent disclosure and annual progress updates, and periodically refines guidance as scientific and policy contexts evolve. SBTi’s target validation and guidance are commonly referenced by customers, investors, and other stakeholders to assess the credibility and comparability of corporate climate commitments within the chemical industry and beyond.
