H2SITE advances marinized ammonia cracking system

Key highlights
  • Project funded through Fast Track Innobideak.
  • Continuous-operation tests used the ammonia cracker developed in the H2OCEAN project, designed for maritime integration.
  • Functional tests of an ammonia burner validated performance and produced design inputs for next-generation burners.
  • Next-generation burners aim to support crackers producing approximately 1 tonne of hydrogen per day to enable initial commercial deployments.

Project scope and funding

The project aimed to further develop and experimentally validate H2SITE’s ammonia cracking system and progressively advance its marinization for onboard and port applications. Funding was provided via Fast Track Innobideak.

Testing and validation

Multiple continuous-operation tests were carried out using the ammonia cracker developed within the H2OCEAN project, whose design targets integration into maritime environments. In parallel, functional tests were performed on an ammonia burner to provide the heat required for the cracking process.

Design outcomes and next steps

Burner tests validated performance under representative operating conditions and generated design insights. Those findings have been incorporated into a next-generation ammonia burner intended for integration into higher-capacity cracking systems.

Scale and deployment intent

The next-generation solution targets hydrogen production rates of approximately 1 tonne of hydrogen per day, a capacity positioned to enable first commercial deployment opportunities.
