Timphaus farm adds EnviTec EnviThan biomethane upgrader in Lohne

Background
The Timphaus farming business in Lohne added biogas alongside pig farming in 2011, citing 20-year guaranteed revenues under Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) to stabilise agricultural income.
Project details
After 15 years under the EEG scheme, the operator is fitting an EnviThan gas upgrading unit with a capacity of 561 Nm³/h. Construction began in January. All plant modules are being prefabricated and tested in EnviTec’s Saerbeck production hall and will be transported to Lohne after successful Factory Acceptance Tests. First injection into the gas grid is expected in October.
Permits and feedstock
The approval for the gas upgrading unit included permission to expand the overall biogas plant, allowing additional feedstocks such as manure and slurry to be used and thereby increasing biogas production for both electricity generation and biomethane upgrading.
Operational impact
The extension follows earlier measures to align the business with market needs: the original EnviTec-built plant has an electrical output of 549 kW and was supplemented in 2020 by a flexible combined heat and power unit of 1,500 kW to enable more flexible, market-timed electricity generation and additional revenue.
