Project Overview

Evonik Industries is constructing a new production plant for specialty copolyesters at its Witten site in Germany. The plant is scheduled to start operations in early 2018, with mechanical completion expected by the end of November 2017. The commissioning phase will follow, leading to commercial operation in Q1/2018.

Investment and Capacity

The company is investing a mid-double-digit million euro sum in the new facility, which will have an annual production capacity of several thousand metric tons. This investment aims to meet the growing demand for bisphenol A-free food packaging solutions.

Market Trends

Specialty copolyesters are increasingly used as binders for paints in coil coatings and food can coatings. Polyester-based coatings are seen as a viable alternative to standard epoxy-based systems, ensuring bisphenol A-free food packaging. Evonik anticipated this trend and decided in late 2015 to expand its capacity to support market growth.

Applications

Evonik is a leading supplier of polyesters for pre-coated metals and reactive hot melts, with production facilities in Marl, Witten, and Shanghai. Polyesters from the DYNAPOL® brand are used as binders for paints in coil coatings and food can coatings, as well as in flexible packaging. Polyesters from the DYNACOLL® brand are used in reactive hot melt applications.
