Expansion Overview
PPG has completed a project to increase precipitated silica production capacity at its Delfzijl, Netherlands, facility. The expansion, operational since earlier this year, adds over 15,000 tons per year of advanced precipitated silica products.
Meeting Global Demand
This added capacity helps PPG meet the growing global demand for AGILON® performance silica products, particularly fulfilling multiyear global supply agreements with major tire manufacturers.
Technological Advancements
Agilon performance silica is a chemically-modified precipitated silica that enhances product performance. In tires, it improves fuel efficiency, traction, and treadwear by 5 to 10 percent. Additionally, it offers environmental and manufacturing benefits by improving throughput and reducing capital expenditure, energy usage, and VOC emissions.
Historical Context
PPG pioneered synthetic precipitated silica in the 1930s and remains a global leader in its manufacture. Their silica products are used in various applications, including tires, industrial products, footwear, silicone rubber, battery separators, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and as anti-caking agents in food and feed.
Global Network
As part of PPG’s specialty coatings and materials business, the silica products group serves customers through a global network of manufacturing, research, and technical-support facilities.
