Its role Owner
Vianode is an advanced battery materials company based in Norway that specializes in the development and production of high-performance synthetic anode graphite for lithium-ion batteries, primarily serving the electric vehicle and energy storage sectors.
The company employs proprietary closed-furnace technology and renewable hydropower to manufacture synthetic graphite with a verified carbon footprint as low as 1.9 kg CO₂e per kg, representing up to 90% lower emissions than conventional production methods. Its main activities encompass R&D at the Vianode Technology Center in Kristiansand, pilot production, and commercial manufacturing at the Via ONE plant in Herøya, Norway, which has a capacity of 2,000 tons per year when fully ramped.
Vianode operates in Europe and is expanding to North America with the planned Via TWO facility in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, targeting up to 150,000 tons annual capacity. Originally established as a spinoff from Elkem in 2021, it is now an independent entity primarily backed by the private equity firm Altor following the exit of Elkem and reduction in Hydro's stake.
In the industry, Vianode positions itself as a supplier of sustainable, non-Chinese anode materials to support resilient supply chains for automakers and battery producers in Europe and North America, with ambitions to supply materials for millions of EVs annually by 2030.
