Founded in 2018 as VACCIGEN S.A.S. and rebranded in 2021 with backing from Grupo SURA, the company operates its headquarters in Medellín, Antioquia, with a state-of-the-art GMP-compliant manufacturing facility in nearby Rionegro. The integrated ecosystem includes R&D, process development, quality control, and production capabilities using viral vector (MVA) and mRNA technologies, supported by technology transfers from international partners such as Serum Institute of India and Codagenix.
Its manufacturing plant, with Phase 1 capacity exceeding 100 million doses annually and expansion plans for 200-300 million, focuses on vaccines for the Expanded Immunization Program including influenza, pentavalent, and polio, as well as innovative candidates like a synthetic yellow fever vaccine. The company also engages in advocacy, personalized medicine initiatives, and partnerships to improve vaccine access across the region.
With financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and European Commission support, VaxThera is positioned to significantly boost Latin America's vaccine production capacity.
