Ultium CAM Limited Partnership is a privately held joint venture specializing in the production of cathode active materials (CAM) for lithium-ion batteries used primarily in electric vehicles.
Established in 2022 through a collaboration between POSCO Future M, which holds the majority 85% stake, and General Motors with a 15% interest, the company operates a dedicated manufacturing facility in Bécancour, Quebec, Canada. It focuses on high-nickel NCM cathode materials that enhance battery capacity, energy density, and performance for EV applications.
The initial phase of the plant has a designed annual capacity of 30,000 tons of cathode active materials, sufficient to equip approximately 500,000 electric vehicles. Production output is contracted for supply to Ultium Cells, the GM and LG Energy Solution battery cell joint venture in the United States, supporting GM's broader EV manufacturing goals.
Located in the Energy Transition Valley innovation zone, Ultium CAM contributes to localizing critical battery materials processing in North America and reducing reliance on Asian supply chains. The project has received significant government financing from Quebec and federal Canadian sources to advance construction and operations.
As a key participant in Quebec's emerging battery industry cluster, the company emphasizes sustainable manufacturing practices while positioning itself as an important supplier in the growing North American electric vehicle ecosystem.
